UMPA LUMPEN room is dedicated to hosting sound explorations curated by the Lumpen Station team. The formats are diverse and depend on the venue our team is invited to. Most of the archives are made during exhibitions in art spaces or unconventional locations, where Lumpen Station sets up collective listening displays and explores diverse sound formats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Most of the contents are first presented during a live broadcast defined as an official opening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Umpa Lumpen wants to reflect a dedication to research processes in different realities, and the capability to explore sound experiences. All the contents are considered as contributions for enlarging the possibilities of\u00a0 sound reception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The name of Umpa is inspired by Wonka's chocolate factory workers, and is associated ironically with Lumpen to reflect the pleasure of working for working\u2019s sake like the Oompa tribe. We also consider the term for its sound potential, like DADA, Umpa Lumpen sounds like a lullaby, a riot scream, a declaration of love, a bureaucratic application, a strange animal\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

SOUNDGATE is a collection of soundworks and live radio made on the road or in collaboration with artist not living in Switzerland. In 2023 Soundgate started with a research trip in the Balkans with the aim to build bridges with various scenes and practicionners. Inspired by the Tv serie Stargate, where beings can travel accross the universe thanks to the stargate, soundgate wish to invite the audience in a kind of same travelling experience. On live sream is so possible to get connected with another space and his atmosphere, but maybe the most relevant point here, are travels in time, as is possible to follow a past moment. THE OFFSCREENS - Basecamp Popup, Locarno film Festival\u00a0<\/span>

Invited to be part of Basecamp Popup exhibition during Locarno film festival, Lumpen Station expanded into an exhibition-studio where for nine days The offscreeens radio show has been recorded. A special team composed by artist performed live and share experimental review on movies, life style and other kind of easter eggs within Locarno film festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

In the second parts of the shows, participants of Basecamp have been discovered during unprepared interviews, sharing with our audience several kind of profiles participating to this summer festival in Ticino, swiss italian part.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The Offscreens as been also made in partenership with Radio Gwen and some mamber of this local swiss italian channel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Performance Reihe Neu-Oerlikon <\/span>curated by Maricruz Penaloza, invited in september 2023 Lumpen Station to make live radio during this event. We had in this frame the occasion to make several hours of live radio inviting into our special \"mobile studio\" artist and performers. The festival had a special focus of Northern Macedonian artist who came to speak to our microphone and shared some impression about Macedonian art scene. These interview are related to Lumpen Station series SOUDNGATE that also present artist and cultural worker active in Nothern Macedonia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

As part of the Swiss pool invited in Supermarket for the 100th anniversary of swiss embassy in Sweden and in such context as an international venue, Lumpen Station team decided to center all his presence on the concept of: cultural exchange.<\/p>\n\n

This imply that : \u201cto meet the others you have first to share what you\u2019re\u201d. In a country like Switzerland, composed by at least four cultures, this goal appears complicated and we can say that one common statement of swiss citizens is to not think themselves as Swiss people, as said the novelist F. Durrematt: Switzerland doesn\u2019t exist.
\nThough, in the last years, in a general movement of \u201clooking for identity\u201d, an alps heritage has been claimed and used in politics tactics. Long story short, last decades dig a binarity between fantasy of origins or na\u00efve folklore fascination, both taken as sort of eternal mythology and a fantasy about authenticity.<\/p>\n\n

On parallel, \u201cSwissness\u201d find a large success in food industry, like if Switzerland was first of all a singular taste, only available around centrals alps and generously distributed by emblematic corporations. During our stay in Supermarket, we aim to \u201cTrade Switzerland\u201d, trying to create from a contemporary art perspective: collisions, exchanges and awareness.<\/p>\n\n

We invited as well seven artist to focus on a swiss practice of their choice.\u00a0 They committed to think what relation they have with their cultural heritage of proximity and to exit from nostalgia or identarian agendas. Trading Switzerland is a sound exhibition composed within contributions by: Rachele Monti, Jules Raynal & Ma\u00eblle Dreier, Charlotte Nagel, Julien Berberat, Paul Courlet and Antoine L\u00e4ng. A collection of vinyls made by swiss bands will be distributed as \u201cdiplomatic gifts\u201d during our daily live talk-show at 2pm while exchanging with our guests in real-time.

Ces travaux constituent une exposition sonore qui s'articule sur plusieurs semaines jusqu'en septembre 2020 et qui va partager avec le public des exp\u00e9riences d'\u00e9coute et une diversit\u00e9 de contenus. La publication\u00a0hebdomadaire sous forme de collection de\u00a0podcasts permet de cr\u00e9er une \u00e9mancipation envers\u00a0la\u00a0grille horaire et de proposer aux auditeur\u00b7trices de rentrer en relation avec les cr\u00e9ations de mani\u00e8re spontan\u00e9e. Simultan\u00e9ment, espace libre Visarte Biel\/Bienne a \u00e9galement d\u00fb\u00a0arr\u00eater ses cycles d'activit\u00e9s publiques et annuler des r\u00e9sidences d'artistes. Face \u00e0 cette situation et dans l'incertitude des mois \u00e0 venir, le directeur de Lokal-int Chri Frautschi \u00e0 propos\u00e9 \u00e0 Andrea Marioni, Artist Run Space d'espace libre, de cr\u00e9er un programme commun sur lumpenstation.art en r\u00e9alisant des directs tous les jeudis \u00e0 la place des vernissages initialement pr\u00e9vus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Sans h\u00e9sitation et dans la volont\u00e9 de maintenir une pr\u00e9sence de la sc\u00e8ne artistique locale et nationale active et en contact avec le public, des \u00e9missions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re spontan\u00e9e, autant avec des artistes pr\u00e9vu\u00b7es \u00e0 Lokal-int que d'autres invit\u00e9\u00b7es sp\u00e9cialement convi\u00e9\u00b7es\u00a0pour ces occasions. Au d\u00e9part, les deux espaces s'attendaient \u00e0 op\u00e9rer de la sorte de mani\u00e8re \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re, entre deux et trois semaines. Mais face aux prolongations des mesures de restrictions pour contenir la pand\u00e9mie du\u00a0Covid-19, ces moments radiophoniques se sont progressivement articul\u00e9s davantage. Les \u00e9missions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pens\u00e9es en deux moments: le premier \"Vernissage \u00e0 domicile\" pr\u00e9sentant le travail d'un\u00b7e artiste\u00a0ou les invitant\u00a0\u00e0 discuter ou encore en partageant de la musique et le deuxi\u00e8me \"after party\" se composant en temps r\u00e9el\u00a0et de mani\u00e8re non-structur\u00e9e \u00e0 travers des discussions et\u00a0des invit\u00e9\u00b7es suppl\u00e9mentaires. Ces \u00e9missions avaient la volont\u00e9 de\u00a0transmettre l'atmosph\u00e8re conviviale et les liens sociaux\u00a0habituellement propos\u00e9s \u00e0 la fin des vernissages de ces deux espaces. En respectant les limitations de regroupement de\u00a05 personnes au maximum,\u00a0en maintenant les distances et en appliquant les gestes barri\u00e8res, ces moments retransmis radiophoniquement se sont progressivement ouverts\u00a0\u00e0 davantage de personnes au fur et \u00e0 mesure des consignes de d\u00e9confinement. Cette s\u00e9rie\u00a0d'\u00e9missions qui a parfois eu des probl\u00e8mes techniques et s'est souvent d\u00e9roul\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re chaotique, marque la volont\u00e9 entre deux espaces d'arts de s'unir dans une situation d'urgence pour garantir une activit\u00e9\u00a0et permettre de garder un lien social\u00a0dynamique et vivant. Ces podcasts peuvent aussi \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9s\u00a0comme une trace qui transcrit des voix, des paroles et de d\u00e9bats pendant la p\u00e9riode la plus incertaine de la pand\u00e9mie du\u00a0Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n

Sweet tunes from Tambora, took place in Praxis art space in Basel to propose\u00a0an immersive exhibition dedicated to radio art practices.
\nLumpen Station and Laptopradi\u00f8\u00a0broadcasted on \u201cwebwaves\u201d\u00a0many sounds forms and engaged\u00a0several invited artist in-situ or at distance.
\nThe audience was\u00a0invited to lay down, close the eyes and literally to float on the sound waves.<\/p>\n\n

Exhibition text:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Shortly, is clear that radio art, is first of all a matter of tune and his presence into visual-arts open the possibility to introduce \u201cmind-pictures\u201d received by ears instead of eyes. The other fact of radio art, is the capability to send a signal and to spread the exhibition atmosphere in others locations, giving to the status of the art space a secondary role. We can say that broadcasted sound art, aim to create a common, based on sharing a time lapse, in which artist and audience are committed on the same reception.
\nThe art space is caring something beyond his walls, his main role is to welcome, to be an \u201cun-authoritarian\u201d space, able to offer a peculiar atmosphere with generosity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

For the official opening of Praxis art space and on the marge of such important venues as Art Basel, Lumpen Station and Laptopradi\u00f8 choose as totem the Indonesian vulcan Tambora, which caused in 1815 a climate change on a global scale. Naturally we do not wish to plunge the world into another cataclysm, but this volcano seems to us, to represent well the researches we\u2019re committed with the concept of radio art: from a place of eruption, the effects of the creations that we broadcast, can be felt at a distance and for a long time.<\/p>\n\n

We aim as well, to exit radio from his usual role confined into a simply tool of communication. Radio is mainly \u201cat service\u201d of others contains, an exhibition like this, put a trouble into this servitude and give a relevant place to sound-forms of expression.<\/p>\n\n

Welcome in the Biosonica Room :\u00a0
\nInspired by the Serbian term Bioskop\u2014cinema, or literally \u201clife watching\u201d\u2014Lumpen Station inaugurates a space dedicated to the presentation of sound recorded in site specific contexts. With the neologism Biosonica, we designate a field of practice that emerges from recordings made across diverse sites and situations. Within the Biosonica room, listeners encounter a spectrum of formats that assemble urban soundscapes, voices, and music, articulated through a specific acoustic frame most of the time resulting from a process base approach. Technical tools are here on a secondary level, indeed some features are made with domestic recordings, with Biosonica our intent is to explore sound with a similar approach photography can have, so to say capture a moment, streets moments, raw material and dynamic explorations. Venezia Parlata\u00a0is a series created after a one-month residency at\u00a0Palazzo Trevisan\u00a0in Venice during\u00a0September 2024<\/span>.
\nSupported by\u00a0Pro Helvetia, our stay allowed us to explore the city through its voices \u2014 and more specifically, through the\u00a0veneziano<\/em>, the local idiom now endangered by gentrification and the declining number of inhabitants within Venice.<\/p>\n\n

The collection opens with a\u00a0\u201cVoicescape\u201d, a sound journey through the city capturing people speaking\u00a0veneziano<\/em>. This approach offers an alternative way to navigate and experience Venice, guiding listeners beyond its usual tourist routes.<\/p>\n\n

Other pieces in the series give voice to the city\u2019s residents, allowing them to describe their daily activities and their evolving relationship with Venice over recent decades.<\/p>\n\n

As an extension of\u00a0Venezia Parlata<\/em>, we included an\u00a0interview recorded at the Biennale\u00a0with artist\u00a0Guerrero Dedivino Amor\u00a0and curator\u00a0Andrea Bellini, whom we met during a talk at the Swiss Pavilion. Although this content lies slightly outside the core of our research, it was produced during the residency and naturally became part of our Venetian experience.<\/p>\n\n

In\u00a02025, we had the opportunity to return to Venice, where we hosted a\u00a0live radio event\u00a0at\u00a0Circolo 3 Agosto, one of the last remaining venues where Venetians can meet and enjoy a cultural program not centered on international audiences. This broadcast, titled\u00a0\u201cRadio Gonzola,\u201d\u00a0was also presented as an extension of the exhibition\u00a0\u201cEstetico Stomp\u201d\u00a0at\u00a0Studio Inchiostro, where\u00a0Andrea Marioni\u00a0exhibited a series of drawings inspired by Venetian iconography, along with the sculpture\u00a0\u201cGonzola.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

OTTERS HOLDING HANDS - Storie della buonanotte e del buongiorno is an
\naudio programme curated by Ambra Viviani for Giulietta, in collaboration with
\nLumpen Station. The title evokes the image of otters holding hands to stay close to
\neach other and not be swept away by the current during sleep, reflecting a space
\nwhere vulnerability can be shared and safely guarded. The subtitle (Good Night
\nand Good Morning Stories)<\/em> marks the liminal moments surrounding sleep, when
\nthoughts, emotions, and memories emerge in their most unguarded forms. Each
\nstory hums with unresolved endings and unspoken beginnings, as if you could flip
\nthe page and find another version waiting on the reverse.
\nAs of 2025, the programme is divided into three seasons, each shaped by the
\nunstable spaces between two: \u00abBetween Pure Rain and Sea Water\u00bb, \u00abA Strange
\nNew Kind of Inbetween Thing\u00bb, and \u00abLoving in Between\u00bb, currently being released.
\nRather than seeking resolution, these seasons focus on inhabiting tension and
\nambiguity. They explore the spaces of in-betweenness, where we exist between
\nthe matter of the world, between categories of identity, and between life and its
\nend, opening up to the possibility of simply enjoying the fact of being here to
\nexperience it.<\/p>\n\n

OHH<\/em> does not offer clear messages or conclusions. Instead, it proposes an
\nenvironment where what is unspeakable or unknown can still be heard. It is a
\nspace for suspended questions, for things we cannot yet say, and for those
\nfleeting moments when everything seems to hang in the dizzying balance between

\nHere, listeners can find artist interviews, career-focused features, thematic series, and conversations about exhibitions. As befits a radio format, our educational program is primarily oral, built on open and free-flowing exchanges.
\nThe content is presented in different languages, depending on the mother tongue of our guests. This section also offers the opportunity to explore in greater depth the practices of invited artists, shedding light on their work from multiple perspectives. \nIn all cases, we preserve our editorial independence while engaging in close dialogue with our partners.

Lumpen Station orchestrates six radio broadcasts from Museum Tinguely in order to offer a series of talks in relation with the BANG BANG program. Small groups of three people will animate each broadcast. They are the \u00abTalking Gazes\u00bb, exchanging live their impressions, feelings, doubts, appreciations on the performances they have seen. The groups are composed by practitioners among diverse cultural disciplines et coming from different swiss regions. In this room, hosted sound works are made by artists proposing one sound experimentation. Guest artists explore a theme, a practice, improvisation, edit, readings, spoken words or music composition. Through an open minded attitude, this room wishes to explore the possibilities of expression under the concept of \"radio art\". Presented as a podcast some works are also live broadcasted within public venues or live streams associated with Lumpen Station activities. All the contents are dedicated to a research practice and offer a specific sound experience to the audience. espace libre Visarte Biel\/Bienne est une salle d'exposition, off-space, artist run space dans le quartier Pasquart \u00e0 Bienne. En juin 2019, Lumpen Station a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9e et se pr\u00e9sente comme une \u00abextension sonore\u00bb de l'espace d'exposition. Pendant tout l'\u00e9t\u00e9 2019, espace libre a accueilli\u00a0des activit\u00e9s sonores : r\u00e9sidences d'artistes, concerts, dj sets et interviews. Ce long programme sur trois mois\u00a0a permis d'exp\u00e9rimenter lors de directs radiophoniques plusieurs formats et approches de la cr\u00e9ation acousmatique. Les artistes en r\u00e9sidence \u00e9taient invit\u00e9\u00b7es \u00e0 vivre \u00e0 Bienne pendant une semaine, en se laissant soit inspirer par une activit\u00e9 de la ville, soit en approfondissant une id\u00e9e pr\u00e9alablement d\u00e9finie.
